Movement Research is a laboratory for the investigation of dance and movement-based forms, based in New York City. The company generates a wide range of artistic output including dance classes, artist residences and exchange programmes, as well as regular journal publications.

Movement Research approached HdK with the desire to rebuild their website. We restructured the website from the ground up, delivering a fresh, user-friendly website with an intuitive sitemap and navigation process.

HdK integrated the website with Filemaker, a database system Movement Research relied on to facilitate their entire online operations, from booking classes, events, and studio hire as well as keeping an archive of all past activities, faculty data and publishing sales. The integration of Filemaker allows MR to use the system as an instant source of information, making the launch of each new season vastly more efficient for their team.

Accessibility was a pivotal component in re-building the website. We developed the site with inbuilt accessibility tools and through committed design, users can view the site in default mode or make their own adjustments such as: contrast, colour palette, page layout and text size. The design is clean and modern, kept sleek and minimalist to reduce the site’s carbon footprint in keeping with MR’s efforts towards sustainability.

Enthusiastic for our web-design, Movement Research decided to commission HdK for a comprehensive re-design of their entire branding. We followed the roots of the existing design system and created a brand toolkit that covered logo usage, colour scheme and colour contrast, typography, iconography, digital marketing assets, promotional material and merchandise.

The colour palette is composed of 5 primary colours inspired by different locations across New York City, home of MR. These included colours such as neutral beige from Bowery, muted red from Bleeker Street, and cool green from The High Line. But we didn’t stop there, we also composed a further set of modular graphic devices to form part of MR’s visual identity. Designed for use across all MR promotional material and their social media channels, the icons follow geometric form and find their shape from different concepts of movement.
