Website

Website design putting a spotlight on the stories of women working in the public transport sector globally.

Remarkable Women Who Move the World is a feminist arts project, working across Brazil, India, Indonesia, and Uganda, rooted in the labour movement and the proud history of women organising into trade unions to improve their lives and wider society.

HdK was asked to respond to the brief for carrying out the discovery and design phases of the project, working to a tight deadline with multiple external partners.

Remarkable Women Who Move the World

An international feminist arts project, Remarkable Women Who Move the World collates stories and multimedia content to make visible the challenges women face in urban mobility. The project brought together a number of partners, including the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) and several international labour unions.

Phase 1 of the project generated a diverse array of content, including photography, video, multimedia, and theatre. With a history of partnership with the ITF, HdK was asked to respond to the creative brief for the website discovery and design at the start of Phase 2. This second phase would focus on integrating these numerous stories and content elements, ensuring they unified into a compelling story about women’s inclusion, rights and leadership in urban mobility.

The objectives for the project focused on to empowering women to share their stories. It aimed to reach a target audience of decision-makers in public transport and gender equality, trade unions, and women workers via a multilingual, accessible website, featuring interactive elements and responsive design.

Although the project’s aims and objectives were clear, the main challenge for all teams involved was to stick to a very tight deadline.

Challenge #1: to establish a clear site structure that responds to the brief’s requirements.

Drawing from our experience in crafting user-friendly and accessible websites, we translated the aims of the brief into a succinct and easy to understand primary navigation. We wanted to put storytelling at the centre of the site because after all the project is all about telling the stories of women workers.

We added visual teasers to the stories right on the home page in order to improve engagement.

Challenge #2: to design a site based on the newly created identity but with clear visual links to the ITF branding.

Given the tight deadline, we were asked to make use of the project’s brand provided by Beach Studio and to expand it in order to achieve a more comprehensive digital identity.

The ITF – one of the promoters of the project – wanted the Remarkable Women’s site to fit into their digital environment; therefore we carefully combined elements of both (ITF’s and Remarkable Women’s brands) into a coherent visual language.

During the design phase, we liaised with external partners responsible for creating the brand, identity, and site development. Finally, we were involved in the deployment phase to ensure that the final product was in line with the identity and web design.

The result

  • A design that unified global stories and multimedia content for an international feminist art project, aiming to influence key decision makers and workers across transport and urban mobility.
  • Accessible, user-friendly, and succinct primary navigation – putting storytelling at the heart of the website.
  • Interactive visual teasers on the home page, encouraging engagement.
  • A seamless extension of the project branding to achieve a coherent visual language and digital identity, using elements provided by multiple stakeholders.
