Shoemakers Museum

Website

Shoemakers Museum is a new cultural space celebrating 200 years of shoemaking in Somerset, opened in Clarks Village. Run by the Alfred Gillett Trust, the museum brings together galleries, events, learning spaces, a café and shop to tell the story of the Clarks factories, family, workers and their global impact.

This website project supported the museum’s launch, creating a strong digital presence ahead of opening and laying the foundations for future growth.

The challenge

With a brand-new museum preparing to open, the Alfred Gillett Trust needed a website that could quickly support visitor engagement and ticket sales. The site had to integrate with a chosen ticketing system, promote events clearly, and reflect a newly developed visual identity, all within a limited budget and timeframe.

The museum also wanted a future-ready platform that could grow over time, including scope for deeper ticketing journeys and integration with its online collections once the museum was fully open.

Shoemaker Museum

The solution

We proposed a phased approach, allowing the museum to launch with the essentials in place while planning for future development. Phase one focused on delivering a robust, accessible website with a clear structure, space for ticketing integration, and a strong visual identity.

Working with brand-new guidelines by Nissen Richards, we developed the first digital expression of the Shoemakers Museum brand. This included building a flexible design system, expanding iconography, and showcasing the Alfred Gillett Trust’s rich archive of photography and video. We worked closely with the Shoemakers Museum team throughout discovery, design, development and QA to ensure the site was practical, clear and ready for launch.

The results

The new website launched in June 2025, providing a confident digital home ahead of the museum’s physical opening later that year. Early results included an increase in newsletter sign-ups, with strong foundations in place to support ticket sales and visitor journeys as the museum opens its doors.
