Finding new trending topics on social media

As time goes by, more trends come into existence and older trends die. With so much going on in the world, I often ask; what have I missed? When is the right time to follow a fashion? And the classic, how didn’t I know about this?

Following and utilizing trending topics is one of the most effective tactics for growing your community.  Therefore, it is vital that you know how to find trends and which your brand should be taking advantage of.

Where should we be looking for trends?

Social media:

Twitter is a useful platform to use when searching for popular topics. Also, it’s a good place to start when you want to find the latest news. The platform has a “moments” section, which organises topics by category; for example, Today, News, Fun, Entertainment etc.

YouTube has a trending page and the platform recommends popular videos in categories such as Gaming, Health, Music, etc.

LinkedIn is fast becoming a platform to go for useful tips, articles and news. It also allows users to follow relevant topics, giving organisations the opportunity to see content competitors and peers have posted.

Google Trends:

Google Trends discovers movements based on Google Search. This tool will also show how effective topics and keywords are, enabling users to compare performance. Furthermore, it breaks down the percentage of searches by area, to discover how well things perform around the world.

Trend Hunter:

Trend Hunter is one of the world’s largest, most popular collections of ideas, which is home to a wide range of data on topics such as Fashion, Technology, Business, TV and so on.

What trends should you follow?

Trends are a great way of attracting new potential audiences and can bring wonderful opportunities. If you use a tending idea well, it can show you are innovative and forward-thinking. Furthermore, trending hashtags are a fantastic way of uniting with similar organisations to bring a topic to a much wider audience through cross-promotion.

However, it’s important to remember that not every trend will be relevant to your audience and brand. You should always consider who you are targeting first; irrelevant information is a turn-off. Keeping up to date with the latest trends can seem like a hassle, but it can also be very rewarding. Having content that is highly relevant to your audience and what they are looking at will not only build your audience, but also strengthen your brand identity.
